In Italy, inequalities are steadily increasing. Limited access to education, gender-based violence, social exclusion, and widening disparities disproportionately affect women, children, young people, and migrants. We are committed not only to implementing concrete projects within local communities, but also to promoting research, awareness-raising, and advocacy initiatives, so that everyone can fully exercise their rights and actively participate in community life.

We have a permanent presence in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Campania, Lazio, Calabria and Abruzzo.

Here, we work closely with individuals and communities, building networks of support, education and participation that grow stronger over time.

We support schools as places of growth and equality, create safe spaces for women and children, promote active citizenship and youth participation, and implement social and environmental justice projects in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

Every year, with the WeWorld Index Italia, we analyse the quality of life of women and children to identify progress, critical issues and new priorities for action. We then explore specific topics — such as period poverty and menstrual justice — through research carried out by our Study Centre, which provides new data and concrete tools to guide fairer and more inclusive policies.

Alongside our ongoing activities, we also collaborate and implement programmes in many other regions of Italy, carrying out initiatives dedicated to education, gender equality, active citizenship, and social and environmental justice.

Education and the right to the future

For years, we have been working in schools and neighbourhoods to tackle educational poverty and early school drop-outs, guaranteeing children their right to the future.

With our educational programme Frequenza200, we are present in the most vulnerable suburbs of cities such as Milan (Barona), Rome (San Basilio), Naples, Cagliari (Sant'Elia), Catania (San Cristoforo), Aversa and Ventimiglia, where we offer educational support, creative workshops, sports and summer activities, as well as psychological counselling and support for families.

In addition, along with teachers and partner schools, we promote courses in civic education and global citizenship to train informed citizens who are capable of thinking critically and acting for the common good. Educating for global citizenship means recognising that we are part of an interconnected world, with shared rights and responsibilities, and committing ourselves to more just and sustainable communities, including as European citizens.

  • Rights of people on the move

In Liguria’s town of Ventimiglia, we have been working since 2016 to support migrants and asylum seekers in transit, so that human rights are guaranteed for all. Many of them, fleeing war, poverty or extreme weather events, are stranded at the Italian-French border.

Every day, we work to uphold dignity, provide assistance, and safeguard human rights. We deliver legal and social support, offer guidance, distribute essential goods, and ensure that everyone who turns to us finds a compassionate and attentive ear.

We support an average of 100 people per month and collaborate with local organisations to ensure that every intervention is guided by humanity and respect.

In 2020, following the closure of the Roja camp, the facility run by the Italian Red Cross that had provided reception for migrants in transit—we opened a shelter to respond to the growing need for safe accommodation. The shelter is dedicated to families and women attempting to cross the border between Italy and France, offering them a secure place to rest for the night.

  • Women's rights

We are committed to tackling all forms of gender-based violence, as change comes through building a culture of respect, autonomy and equality, starting with everyday relationships and educational contexts.

Through our Spazio Donna WeWorld programme, active in Milan, Bologna, Rome, Naples, Pescara and Cosenza, we offer safe and welcoming places where women experiencing violence or vulnerability can rebuild self-confidence, restore relationships, and regain their independence.

Here, thanks to a specialised team, we offer listening, psychological and legal counselling, job guidance and personalised pathways out of violence. A space dedicated to children also allows us to support the relationship between mothers and their sons and daughters and to recognise situations of distress or abuse at an early stage.

  • Social and environmental justice

Our commitment to equality also extends to environmental justice.

The climate crisis is not only an ecological issue, but also a social one: its consequences - poverty, migration, inequality - disproportionately affect the most vulnerable people. That is why we promote projects for environmental sustainability, land protection and active citizenship, involving young people and schools in environmental education and climate awareness programmes.

We believe that a fair and sustainable future can only be achieved by advancing social and environmental justice together, recognising that the well-being of people and the planet are deeply interconnected.

  • Awareness campaigns

Alongside local projects, we carry out awareness campaigns and public initiatives to promote rights, equity and gender equality.

Through partnerships with the fields of sport, culture, and media, we amplify messages of respect and inclusion, and call for fairer policies for people and communities. From tackling violence against women to the right to education, all our campaigns are designed to highlight inequalities and build collective awareness.

  • Meetings

We believe that direct contact with people is essential for building an active and participatory community. That's why, every year we organise the WeWorld Festival Milano, which takes place in the spring, and the WeWorld Festival Bologna, in the autumn: two open and free events that bring talks, art, music, debates and cinema to the cities to keep the spotlight on the issues such as gender equality, human rights and environmental and social justice.

These events offer a chance to meet face-to-face, exchange ideas, and share experiences, helping to grow our community while hearing from those who work daily to defend the rights of all, fostering a more conscious and open-minded society ready for change.
