Africa South-East
For over 30 years, we have been working alongside communities in South-East Africa to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time, with integrated interventions ranging from development to humanitarian action.
From Tanzania to Burundi, Kenya to Mozambique to the Democratic Republic of Congo, we promote food security, combat malnutrition, school dropout and the impacts of climate change, strengthening the resilience of communities. Together with strategic partners, organisations, local authorities and community leaders, we are also committed to promoting gender justice through initiatives aimed at preventing early marriage, female genital mutilation, combating gender-based violence and ensuring menstrual justice.
Our work is carried out at both local and regional levels, through multi-country programmes and strategic alliances.
We have been present in Burundi since 1995, meeting the basic needs of the most vulnerable people. Our interventions mainly concern the areas of nutrition, health, food security and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). We also work with refugee communities from neighbouring countries, especially the Democratic Republic of Congo, and with returnees, who are returning to Burundi after spending varying lengths of time outside the country, supporting their social and economic reintegration.
We have been present in Mozambique since 2000, working in both the development sector and emergency response. For over 15 years, our main areas of intervention have been food security and agriculture. In recent years, in order to respond to new needs, we have added the following activities: preparation and response to natural disasters, linked to resilience to climate change; support for social cohesion and peacebuilding, with a particular focus on conflict prevention and the violent radicalisation of young people; strengthening educational services and family income opportunities.
Siamo nella Repubblica
We have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2020, with projects aimed at restoring access to essential WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) services to improve public health and community resilience.
To respond to growing needs, we are also mobilising additional resources and exploring the expansion of our activities through multisectoral assessments in conflict-affected areas.
We take an integrated approach to the climate crisis, which includes disaster risk reduction (DRR) and early warning systems for climate hazard forecasting and timely information dissemination. We complement emergency response interventions with development actions, climate awareness, urban regeneration, climate-resilient agriculture and the promotion of active participation by younger generations in decision-making processes. In Mozambique, in particular, this integrated approach has enabled a coordinated response to the cyclones that have hit the country in recent years.
In fragile contexts marked by growing inequalities – such as the coastal region linking Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique – we carry out peacebuilding and social cohesion interventions, supporting community dialogue, conflict prevention and resolution, and the participation of younger generations in decision-making processes.
We have been present since 2009-2010 and support children in their right to education, working with schools, teachers and families to improve the quality of learning and encourage school participation.
In both countries, we also run our Long Distance Sponsorship programme, which provides children with safe and stimulating environments in which to grow, learn and build their future.

Last September, we inaugurated the Maputo Natural History Museum after approximately two years of intensive renovation work carried out in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome and the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station.
