Our projects for environmental justice and sustainability and to counter the impacts of the climate crisis

Our response on the environmental and social impact of the climate crisis

Climate change represents one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with increasingly serious consequences for people, territories and ecosystems. At WeWorld, we work to address the environmental and social impact of the climate crisis through concrete, participatory, and long-lasting environmental sustainability projects, along with global citizenship education and youth participation projects.

We are active in Italy and around the world, where we work alongside communities to build concrete responses, together, and thus contribute to the right to the future of those most affected-and least responsible-for the climate crisis. We provide access to tools to counter and adapt to the effects of the climate crisis, while promoting environmental and social justice. We do this through the organization of awareness-raising campaigns and projects in the area. We strongly believe in the active involvement of people from the early stages of project design to their implementation, so that they can be protagonists in their own change.

What we do to counter the environmental and social impact of the climate crisis

Our response to climate change translates into concrete actions that aim to counter the impacts of the climate crisis. Our interventions are based on an integrated approach, combining field actions, environmental education and advocacy. In particular, we work with women and young people, recognizing them both as protagonists of change and as the groups most affected by the climate crisis.

This is the basis of our research On Our Lands, On Our Bodies, also presented at COP30 in Brazil, which investigates the link between climate change and sexual and reproductive health. The study collects firsthand accounts from women and girls in Kenya, Tanzania, and Brazil, highlighting how environmental degradation concretely impacts people's bodies, lives, and rights.

The active involvement of the younger generation is crucial in combating climate change. We support them in speaking out in the climate debate, facilitating access to spaces for participation and promoting their contribution in decisions that affect them. In every context in which we operate, we involve local communities from the early stages of projects, so that they can be active protagonists of change in their own territories. Intervening together isn't just about addressing the damage that has already occurred: it's essential to strengthen people's resilience by promoting their ability to adapt to climate change, building resilience on the ground, and also strengthening community capacities that best adapt and respond.

Our intervention in Italy

We also work with institutions, civil society organizations, and local partners to foster a more equitable and sustainable consumption, food, and social model that focuses on people's rights and takes into account the needs of communities and environmental protection.

This is why we support environmental sustainability projects that not only address the effects of climate change, but also promote climate justice and corporate responsibility.

In this area, we work to promote regulatory instruments such as the European Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, which obliges companies to prevent and correct the negative impacts of their activities on human rights, local communities, and the environment. It is a key tool to protect those experiencing the direct consequences of the environmental impact of the climate crisis and to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the value chain.

In this area, we work to promote regulatory instruments such as the European Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, which obliges companies to prevent and correct the negative impacts of their activities on human rights, local communities, and the environment. It is a fundamental tool to protect those experiencing the direct consequences of the environmental impact of the climate crisis and to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the value chain. We promote campaigns such as Impresa2030 and Justice is Everybody's Business, and actively participate in the European Coalition for Corporate Justice, to call for effective laws that protect the environment and the rights of citizens, citizens, consumers and consumers. True environmental justice also involves policies that make businesses part of the solution, not the problem.

Global Citizenship Education: Building Awareness of Climate Change

At WeWorld, we promote global citizenship education pathways that integrate climate change and social and environmental justice to strengthen awareness and accountability on these issues among younger generations.

Together with operational interventions, we at WeWorld invest in raising awareness and actively participating citizens, both in Italy and in other European countries. We do so because we believe that an aware citizenship involved in decision-making processes is essential to address the challenges posed by climate change and build a sustainable future.

IIn Italy, we collaborate with middle and high schools, developing programs based on participatory and cross-cutting methodologies that integrate the themes of climate justice, human rights, and the 2030 Agenda. Every year we offer free activities for students and teachers to raise awareness of major global issues: climate, environment, and migration. Global Citizenship Education in schools is essential for educating and raising awareness among new generations, so that they adopt responsible attitudes and behaviors and active citizenship.

Our initiatives to promote global citizenship include:

  • Educational toolkits such as Peer for Climate
  • European projects such as Our World Our Planet involving young people from different countries
  • Academic collaborations such as that with the University of Bologna, which combine education, research and concrete action on climate change and the environmental impact of the climate crisis

In addition to our work in schools, we promote youth activism through initiatives such as WeWorld Festivals, where environmental and climate justice issues are placed at the center of discussions between young people, institutions, and civil society.
During Activist Chat –a format we designed to promote informal spaces for dialogue and discussion among young people, experts, activists, and activists, with the aim of exploring the issues of climate justice, rights, and active participation– and in training programs such as Be A Change Maker, girls and boys have the opportunity to directly engage with organizations and organizations working in the local area. These moments are not just spaces for expression and dialogue, but become concrete opportunities to acquire critical tools and understand how climate justice decision-making processes and public policies work.

Our interventions in the world

Reducing the environmental impact of the climate crisis also means caring for the most vulnerable ecosystems, which are being severely challenged by the increasing frequency of extreme climate events. It is in these contexts that adaptation and mitigation strategies become crucial, fundamental tools for strengthening communities' capacity to live in balance with their environment.

At WeWorld, we promote environmental sustainability projects that aim to conserve, enhance, and restore local ecosystems, actively involving the people who live there and depend on them for their survival.

For example, in Mozambique and, more precisely, in Maputo Bay, we intervene with useful strategies to preserve mangroves, an ecosystem essential for the survival of those living in the coastal area. Local communities, which base their economy on fishing and agriculture, participate in environmental education programmes that are inclusive and particularly attentive to the new generations. We promote sustainable agricultural techniques and alternative activities that reduce the impact of human activity on the environment, contributing to food security and the protection of natural balances.
