Education in emergencies

In crisis and conflict situations, guaranteeing the right to education is a priority.

Education is a fundamental right and a means of protection for children and adolescents. That is why we work to ensure that learning continues even in the most critical situations, by creating safe, inclusive and high-quality spaces, as in Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Mozambique.

In Syria, we are present in rural and more isolated areas of the governorates of Aleppo, Deir-ez-Zor and Raqqa, rehabilitating schools with a gender-sensitive approach and promoting non-formal education programmes that also take into account the needs of students with disabilities, in order to reduce the risk of school dropout. Our interventions also include the continuous training of teachers and educational staff to ensure inclusive and safe learning environments, even in contexts with limited resources.

In Palestine, we intervene to ensure the continuity of education despite frequent interruptions caused by the conflict. Our actions aim to reach children in the most affected areas by creating safe, temporary learning spaces, providing remedial education and strengthening the skills of teachers and caregivers. The goal is to support children's right to education and their educational and psychosocial well-being by promoting inclusive, resilient learning environments that are attentive to the needs of communities.

In Lebanon, in the Akkar region, we promote access to inclusive education by strengthening teachers' skills, providing homework support and raising awareness among parents. The project aims to create accessible school environments that are attentive to the well-being of all students, improving some public schools by refurbishing spaces and offering recreational and sports activities, promoting accessible environments with a particular focus on the most vulnerable.

In Mozambique, especially in the province of Cabo Delgado, we ensure the continuity of education for children and adolescents affected by conflict. We provide remedial classes to enable students to fill in the gaps in their education and facilitate their reintegration into the educational system. In addition, we are committed to building and rehabilitating schools, creating safe, inclusive learning spaces that are tailored to the needs of the community, promoting access to education as a fundamental right and a means of protection.

Our programmes address concrete obstacles such as poverty, lack of accessible infrastructure, child labour and gender discrimination. We work with communities, teachers and families to build educational pathways that offer all children the opportunity to learn, grow and develop their full potential, even in the most fragile contexts. We believe that investing in education in emergencies means not only providing learning tools, but also helping to build safer and more inclusive communities that are capable of protecting children's rights even in the most difficult circumstances, affirming the right of every child and young person to a future of possibilities, not obstacles, in which they can grow up with equal opportunities, be heard and build their own path with confidence.
