Lebanon Emergency: severe humanitarian needs persist

Lebanon Emergency. Despite the cessation of hostilities agreement that came into force on 17 April 2026 and was recently extended, the situation in Lebanon remains extremely critical. Airstrikes continue, particularly in the south of the country and in the Bekaa region, worsening an already deep humanitarian crisis.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, since 2 March 2026 at least 2,883 people have been killed and more than 8,787 injured, while civilian infrastructure, homes and essential services have been severely damaged.
The consequences are devastating: hospitals hit, roads destroyed, difficulties in accessing water and growing insecurity for the civilian population.

The crisis has led to continuous population movements. By mid-May, more than 83 localities were under evacuation orders and thousands of people are still displaced.
Large-scale returns are not yet possible, particularly in southern Lebanon and in the Nabatieh region, where destruction, military presence and instability persist.

Many families are currently living in overcrowded collective shelters, temporary rented accommodations, informal settlements or they are hosted by local communities.
This growing pressure puts both displaced people and host communities at risk.

Health facilities in affected areas are operating at reduced capacity due to damage, staff shortages and disrupted supply chains.
At the same time, water and sanitation systems are severely compromised, increasing the risk of disease and worsening living conditions.

The population, particularly the most vulnerable people, needs:
• protection
• healthcare
• access to water
• food
• shelter and essential supplies

In response to this emergency, at WeWorld we have activated multisectoral interventions across Akkar, Bekaa, North and South Lebanon.

As of 15 May 2026, we have reached more than 20,000 displaced people in 102 collective shelters and in 18 additional locations.

In particular, we are providing life-saving support through:
The supply of water and the repair of water systems and sanitation facilities:
• Distribution of over 37,430 litres of fuel to keep water infrastructure operational
• The distribution of more than 1,000 hygiene kits, including emergency kits, menstrual hygiene kits, kits for older people and people with disabilities, and kits for children under the age of 2
• The distribution of 1,795 ready-to-eat meals and 711 parcels of dry food
• The distribution of more than 7,200 essential items.

We are continuing our daily work to provide humanitarian assistance and support the affected communities; however, a sustained commitment from the entire international community and the support of everyone who chooses to stand alongside the Lebanese people is essential.
