Mozambican children have dreams and hopes but they also face several challenges in a country that is dealing with an armed conflict and an unprecedented climate crisis.

Their stories and those of their families often remain unheard, but Italian-Tunisian cartoonist Takoua Ben Mohammed is changing the narrative with Growing up in Mozambique: the new graphic novel that she created after spending two weeks with our colleagues in Mozambique.

Mozambique is in fact one of the world's poorest countries and one of the worst hit by drought, cyclones and flooding. Takoua met with local communities striving to deal with the consequences of the environmental emergencies and armed conflict taking place, illustrating for us the particular importance of schools as safe havens capable of building a future of hope for the girls and boys in Mozambique.

The book was funded by the European Union as part of the REDE-EDUCAMA project.
