Context :

In a context marked by chronic nutritional vulnerability and challenges linked to access to basic health services, nutrition remains a major issue for the most vulnerable populations, particularly in rural areas and refugee camps.

The RESILIENCE II - TWUZUZANYE project, implemented by WeWorld-GVC, is part of an integrated approach to building community, institutional and health capacity to combat malnutrition in all its forms.
This nutritional component of the project aims to improve the nutritional status of communities by acting at different levels: building the capacities of key players, supporting health structures, promoting good food and health practices, and large-scale awareness-raising campaigns.

Project objectives:

The RESILIENCE II - TWUZUZANYE project aims to strengthen the resilience of Burundi's rural populations to shocks and adverse conditions, by acting on several key levers:

  • Improve access to health services, particularly in sexual, reproductive and nutritional health and in response to health emergencies (WWGVC's interventions can be found here).
  • Strengthening the sustainable management of land and natural resources, while preventing and reducing the risk of natural and climatic disasters.

Main activities:

The main activities focus on the following areas:

  • Institutional support, in particular through support for nutritional surveys (such as the SMART survey), revision of reference documents and active participation in national coordination platforms such as PPSAN.
Strengthening community skills, by training Parents Lumière in FAN/FARN and Community Health Workers (CHWs) in ANJE practices, as well as training Health Centre (CDS) staff in screening for and treating malnutrition.
  • Improving health infrastructure by integrating the WASH in NUT approach and installing autonomous photovoltaic systems in health facilities.
Supporting screening mechanisms, the referral and counter-referral system, and revitalising FAN and FARN by supplying equipment and holding follow-up meetings between key players (BPS, BDS, TPS, PRONIANUT, Parents Lumière).
  • Promoting good practice in schools, by training teachers, supporting school nutrition and hygiene clubs, and improving health infrastructure (ECOSAN latrines, hand-washing facilities).
  • Raising awareness on a large scale about nutrition, hygiene, food diversification and gender, through targeted community actions and the production of communication media such as radio spots.

Expected results:

As part of its contribution to the RESILIENCE II - TWUZUZANYE consortium, WeWorld-GVC is responsible for the nutrition component. As such, the following expected result specifically reflects its interventions:

  • Strengthening of local and national capacities in the prevention, detection and management of malnutrition.

Other results are expected from the other members of the consortium, depending on their respective areas of expertise
