Population growth in Burundi is 3,7% on average, with a fertility rate of 5,9 children per woman. The Demographic and Health Survey of 2017 (EDS III – 2017) shows that every year 712 women on 100.000 childbirths die during or after the delivery, this is due to the insufficient access to healthcare, lack in managing infections, inadequate health and hygiene measures, scarce nutrition and complications during childbirth.

Motherhood morbidity reduction is obstructed also due to the increase of sexual and gender violence cases, especially inside the Congolese refugees and internally displaced people camps. The action wants to contribute to morbidity and maternal mortality reduction among displaced and hosting population in the Provinces of Gitega, Makamba, Bubanza, Bujumbura Rurale, Rumongue, Muyinga, Cibitoka, Ruyigi, Cankuzo and Rutana. Precisely, the aim is to increase the national capacity to provide quality obstetrician services and prevent harmful practices through the introduction of a monitoring system for state services of Human mobility Obstetric And Newborn Care (Soins Obstétricaux et Néonatals d'Urgence- SONU). Moreover, the project wants to improve the quality of prevention and response interventions to gender-based violence (GBV) through training courses led by obstetricians and qualified personnel, in order to inform and raise awareness among women living in the Provinces that are most at risk.
